Queen Camilla’s Reading Room has donated books to Spellow Library in Liverpool, aiding the library's efforts to rebuild after it was set on fire during riots on August 3.
The Spellow Library Hub, a beloved community center, was known for supporting various groups and serving as a bustling gathering place.
The Queen’s Reading Room, an online book club founded by Queen Camilla to promote community and literacy, announced on social media that they had donated many of the books featured in previous seasons of the club.
On Wednesday, August 21, the Reading Room shared, "Today, we celebrate the unique and beautiful power of books to bring us together."
The post continued, "It has brought us immense joy to see authors from across the UK donating books to help rebuild Liverpool’s Spellow Library Hub after its recent destruction. Last week, The Queen gifted some of the titles we’ve cherished in this book club. From Hilary Mantel to Min Jin Lee, from Charlie Mackesy to Edna O’Brien, these books have sparked our imaginations, challenged us, uplifted us, and filled our hearts with joy.
We hope that soon the local community can come together again and experience the special magic that bursts from books on library shelves.”
In addition to these donations, a community-led fundraiser has successfully raised over £250,000 to support the library’s reconstruction. Photo by HM Government, Wikimedia commons.
