UK energy company Drax said on Thursday it is exploring plans to transform part of its Yorkshire power station—once a major coal-fired facility—into a large-scale data centre as early as 2027.
The company said it is preparing a planning application for a potential first-phase data centre of around 100 megawatts, to be built on land already identified at the Drax Power Station site. The project would make use of existing infrastructure and grid connections originally installed for coal generation.
Drax also signalled stronger-than-expected financial results, noting that it anticipates its full-year 2025 core profit to come in at the upper end of market forecasts amid rising electricity demand in the UK.
