UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, alongside Defence Secretary John Healey, concluded a one-day visit to Lebanon yesterday. This marked Lammy's first official visit
to Lebanon as Foreign Secretary, following a recent call with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati during his first week in office.
During the visit, Foreign Secretary Lammy emphasized the need for de-escalation along the Blue Line, advocating for a diplomatic resolution grounded in UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This visit follows Lammy's condemnation of a strike in the Golan Heights, which resulted in at least 12 fatalities and heightened concerns about potential further escalation and regional destabilization.
Lammy and Healey held discussions with key Lebanese leaders, including Prime Minister Mikati, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Joseph Aoun. Their talks primarily addressed the tensions along Lebanon's southern border with Israel and the broader regional situation.
This visit is part of Lammy's broader regional tour over the past month, during which he has reiterated the UK Government’s calls for de-escalation in the region, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
