The Minister for the Middle East, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, embarks on a diplomatic visit to the Gulf region to engage in discussions on regional security with key partners.
Beginning his trip in Bahrain on Sunday, April 21st, Lord Ahmad will then proceed to the UAE. His itinerary includes a visit to the UK’s Naval Support Facility in Bahrain, where the UK has been actively involved in operations against Iran-backed Houthi attacks on international shipping.
During his visit, Lord Ahmad is scheduled to meet with counterparts to address various pressing issues, including the situation in Israel and Gaza, regional security concerns, and the state of affairs in the Red Sea region.
The UK Minister of State for the Middle East aims to reinforce the UK’s commitment to safeguarding regional security and combatting the threats posed by Iran-backed proxies and partners. His visit underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing these challenges effectively.
In Bahrain, Lord Ahmad will tour the UK Maritime Component Command at the Naval Support Facility, where UK forces are engaged in Operation Prosperity Guardian and Operation Poseidon Archer alongside global allies. These operations aim to counter Houthi aggression and safeguard international shipping from indiscriminate attacks.
Lord Ahmad will also hold discussions with Bahraini officials, including the National Security Advisor, Foreign Minister, and Interior Minister, to address ongoing conflicts in Israel and Gaza. He will emphasize the UK’s efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza and advocate for a cessation of hostilities.
In the UAE, Lord Ahmad will continue discussions on the Israel-Gaza conflict, focusing on humanitarian responses and regional de-escalation efforts. Additionally, he will explore avenues for supporting the peace process in Sudan.
Lord Ahmad emphasizes the importance of collective action in promoting regional stability and security, particularly amidst current challenges. He underscores the pivotal role of close partnerships with Bahrain and the UAE in addressing humanitarian crises and addressing security threats posed by Iran-backed groups.
