The United Kingdom has pledged an additional £225 million ($286 million) in military aid to Ukraine, aimed at bolstering its defense against Russian aggression.
Significance of the pledge
The announcement comes as Ukraine appeals for greater support both militarily and diplomatically, ahead of any potential negotiations with Russia. With the conflict nearing its third year, Ukrainian forces face significant challenges, stretched thin along a 1,170-km (727-mile) frontline.
Breakdown of the defence Ppckage
The new aid package includes:
- £92 million for naval support: small boats, reconnaissance drones, uncrewed surface vessels, loitering munitions, and mine countermeasure drones.
- £68 million for air defense: radars, decoy land systems, and electronic warfare tools to counter drones.
- £26 million to sustain and repair previously supplied systems.
- £39 million for over 1,000 counter-drone electronic warfare units, along with joint procurement of respirators and other protective equipment for Ukrainian Armed Forces.
In addition to the equipment, Britain will expand military training programs for Ukrainian personnel.
Statement from the UK
"The brave people of Ukraine continue to defy all expectations with their unbreakable spirit," said British Defence Minister John Healey. "But they cannot go it alone – which is why the UK will step up our international leadership on Ukraine throughout 2025."
