Sir Keir Starmer and his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, have officially paid off the mortgage on their £2 million townhouse in north London’s Kentish Town, according to
official documents. The couple is now among the top one-third of English homeowners who no longer face mortgage or rent payments.
The four-bedroom property, situated in a trendy area of north London, became mortgage-free on September 16, when the loan from Barclays Bank, noted on the Land Registry title deed, was marked as "discharged." This means the bank no longer holds any rights over the four-storey terraced home.
Sir Keir has previously used his own mortgage experience as a political tool, criticizing former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for not understanding the struggles caused by rising mortgage rates.
The Starmers purchased the property in 2004 for £650,000 and have since carried out renovations, including a loft conversion with two rooflights and a dormer window. The home’s value has since soared to an estimated £2 million. Combined with Sir Keir’s £1 million pension pot, the Labour leader is believed to have a net worth of approximately £3 million.
Despite his significant wealth, Sir Keir, who earned up to £400 an hour during his 20 years as a top lawyer before entering politics, has often downplayed his financial status. During the 2020 Labour leadership contest, he even stated, "I’m not a millionaire."
Currently, Sir Keir earns two annual salaries—one as a constituency MP and one as Prime Minister—amounting to £166,786. His wife, Victoria, works in the NHS in occupational health, after a previous career as a solicitor, with a salary believed to be up to £50,000 pro rata.
In recent days, Sir Keir has faced criticism for accepting more than £100,000 worth of gifts and hospitality over the past five years. These include £18,000 worth of suits and spectacles from Labour donor Lord Waheed Alli and access to a luxury box at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
