Queen Camilla highlights the importance of literature during Chelsea school visit

Queen Camilla spent Wednesday celebrating the joy of literature with school children and learning about how they are encouraged to read.

Queen Camilla visited Christ Church School in Chelsea to meet with pupils and learn more about their month-long festival celebrating reading and books. She toured the school with teachers and observed the various methods used to inspire children to read and explore literature.

During her visit, Queen Camilla emphasized the significance of reading and its transformative power, stating: "Each one of you has the potential to be a star… Books are magical portals that can transport you to different worlds, introduce you to new ideas, and help you understand the world around you. By reading, you are opening doors to endless possibilities and opportunities."

She also donated several books to the school to be added to its library.

Reading and literature are incredibly important to Queen Camilla, who supports several initiatives to encourage reading and build community at all ages. In 2021, she launched The Queen’s Reading Room (initially known as The Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room), an online book club designed to bring people together through literature. The Queen’s Reading Room Festival was held for the second year at Hampton Court Palace earlier in June.

In addition to discussing reading with the pupils, they also showed her a mosaic they designed and created in honor of King Charles’s May 2023 Coronation. Photo by Dan Marsh, Wikimedia commons.
