Wandsworth and Haringey named as Mayor’s London Boroughs of Culture for 2025 and 2027

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced that Wandsworth and Haringey have been designated as the winners of the prestigious London Borough of Culture for 2025 and 2027,

respectively.

Under this initiative, each borough will receive £1.35 million to curate a year-long program of creative and cultural events, aimed at fostering community engagement, nurturing talent, and stimulating economic growth. By harnessing the power of culture and celebrating the diversity of London, these initiatives will provide invaluable opportunities for young people while showcasing the rich heritage and vibrancy of each borough.

Established in June 2017, the London Borough of Culture award draws inspiration from similar cultural programs across the UK and Europe, aiming to empower local communities and ignite a cultural renaissance in the capital. Previous recipients, including Waltham Forest, Brent, Lewisham, and Croydon, have demonstrated the transformative impact of cultural investment, enriching lives and inspiring future generations.

Wandsworth's cultural program for 2025 will focus on the transformative role of culture and heritage in enhancing well-being and resilience, offering a diverse range of events and activities. Meanwhile, Haringey's program for 2027 will spotlight local talent and community spirit through a series of large-scale events and grassroots initiatives.

In addition to the London Boroughs of Culture, the Mayor also recognized Barnet, Merton, and Greenwich as winners of the Cultural Impact Awards. These boroughs will receive funding of up to £200,000 to support smaller-scale creative projects within their communities.

Commenting on the announcement, Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his enthusiasm for the cultural initiatives, emphasizing their role in uniting communities, empowering young people, and driving economic prosperity. He highlighted the success of previous London Boroughs of Culture and expressed confidence in Wandsworth and Haringey's ability to deliver exceptional cultural programs.

Echoing these sentiments, Laura Citron, CEO of London & Partners, emphasized the importance of showcasing the diverse cultural offerings of London's neighborhoods, enriching the visitor experience and promoting longer stays in the city.

Leaders of Wandsworth and Haringey councils, Simon Hogg and Cllr Peray Ahmet, respectively, expressed their delight at being selected as London Boroughs of Culture. They pledged to deliver dynamic and inclusive cultural programs that celebrate the unique identity and heritage of their boroughs, promising an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors alike.

As London prepares to embark on these cultural journeys, supported by funding and enthusiasm from local communities, the Mayor's vision of a culturally vibrant and inclusive capital takes another significant step forward. Photo by Stevekeiretsu, Wikimedia commons.
